Hurricane Could Have Helped Republicans
Because of the Iraqi civil war, Bush’s ineptitude and several GOP scandals, the Democrats have a great chance to win the House and possibly the Senate. If only a hurricane would have hit, that would have really helped the Republican Party…
Unfortunately, for the residents of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, hurricane Katrina hit in a non-election year. There were a few factors, including incompetence that led to the slow response by FEMA, but do not underestimate the fact that it was a non-election year.
In 2004, when the Presidency, House and Senate were up for grabs, FEMA’s response to Hurricane Charley was lightning quick. They were on the ground and ready. And the next day Bush was walking through rubble and hugging babies. His poll numbers in Florida increased significantly and he won the state by a wider margin than he otherwise would have. Had the hurricanes that rocked Florida not hit, Bush may very well have lost Florida in 2004, and as a result lost the presidency.
So the GOP desperately needed that hurricane this year. They had to show they were prepared, competent and compassionate. Unfortunately for New Orleans, the hurricane hit the wrong year. This was why Bush flew over the disaster and was not on the ground hugging babies like 2004.
