Abizaid And McCain Butt Heads Over Iraq
Today, General John Abizaid did another fun Q&A session with Congress. Abizaid fielded all sorts of wonderful questions by members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Questions like what the hell is going on in Iraq and what do we do about it?
As usual, Abizaid gave grim news but also a glimmer of hope saying violence is slightly down. Abizaid rejected the idea of higher troop levels in the short term, saying that it would take away motivation for Iraqi’s to do the job. This left Senator John McCain scratching his head as he would like to see troop levels increased from 140,000 to 200,000.
After the U.S. toppled Iraq, General Eric Shinseki said that 200,000 troops would be needed to secure the country. The Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld team did not like the idea and General Shinseki was released. Today, Abizaid admitted that Shinseki was right, too bad this news comes 3 and 1/2 years and thousands of deaths later.
