Americans Give Thanks, Then Sell Soul

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday marked by families coming together to eat and give thanks for what they have. Or so it should be! Unlike Christmas, there are no gifts and no dissapointments over material things. Sure, the most drunk driving fatalities occur over Thanksgiving weekend, but it’s a time of fun and of all our major holidays, the day itself is the least commercial.

Now, the day after…Not so much! Many mega stores like Best Buy opened at 5am, with mega deals for first come, first serve. Hence, many people camped out over night to snatch the precious items they so desired. If that meant pushing someone over in the process, in some cases, so be it. The average Thanksgiving weekend shopper spent $370 this year. To put this in some perspective, the average yearly wage in poor countries like Haiti is about $600, that’s right, yearly.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is the kickoff of the material holidays shopping season. It is officially known as Black Friday because it is the day in which businesses go from being in the red to being in the black. Or is it named this because it is the day that many Americans sell their souls for a cool plasma TV?
