Down But Back Up For Trent Lott

Four years ago, then Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott said “When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either.” Many took this as a racially insensitive remark because Thurmond had opposed de-segregation when he ran for president.

Lott took a lot of heat and eventually stepped down as Majority Leader. Of course, he still won re-election in Mississippi this year because comments like that don’t affect candidates there. And today he was elected back to a leadership position by Republicans, who voted 25-24 for him over Lamar Alexander as Senate Minority Whip. We wonder what other things Trent Lott would like to whip…
