‘Blood Diamond’ Not Good For Diamond Industry

The release of ‘Blood Diamond,’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connolly has gotten diamond company’s like De Beers on the defensive. The film, which opens today, centers around the war in Sierra Leone from 1991-2002 which was largely funded by diamonds.

The diamond industry has been scrutinized in the past for dealing in a shiny object that has cost the lives of thousands of people. De Beers claims that it has not knowingly purchased any blood diamonds in recent years. Thing is, De Beers purchases 95% of its diamonds from an African collective. Therefore, they have no way of knowing where the diamonds come from. It’s a wonderful little naive game that De Beers is playing.

Hollywood, which typically helps the diamond industry, might hurt it a bit this holiday season. Of course, doubtfully by much. Women will still want their shiny objects, and men, wanting to please them, will purchase them. It’s fucking Christmas after all!
