Crack Open the Bubbly Big Business!

The Supreme Court awarded another big victory for ‘Big Business’ and an uppercut loss to consumers. In another 5-4 decision where Anthony Kennedy cast the deciding the vote, the court ruled to overturn a 96 year ban on price floors.

For the past 96 years it has been illegal for manufacturers and distributors to set minimum retail prices because it was viewed as a violation of antitrust laws. Not anymore! Now manufacturers can set the minimum price on goods to be sold by retailers. Justice Stephen Breyer spoke on behalf of the 4 dissenting judges saying “I do not believe that the majority has shown new or changed conditions sufficient to warrant overruling a decision of such long standing.” He went on to say that the new ruling could cost a family of 4 somewhere around $750-$1,000 per year. There goes the facade that is the ”tax cut” for middle class Americans, granted it has already been taken by ‘Big Business’ in the form of increased health care costs and skyrocketing gas prices.

It hasn’t been a better time to be ‘Big Business’ since early 1900’s America! Perhaps the “progressive” rulings of the Supreme Court will take us back to the glory years of a time where people lived on company grounds and had to buy overpriced goods from the company store.

Fortunately, the Supreme Court will not be judging for several months as they are going into summer recess. But take a good look at this guy, Justice Anthony Kennedy, he has been the swing vote in numerous recent supreme court cases. You can make the argument that domestically speaking, Justice Kennedy is currently as powerful as ‘The Decider’ George Bush.
