Fred Thompson: Philosopher King?

For the last few months we’ve been hearing about how Fred Thompson has never desired to be President which is why he would make a good president. This got me thinking back to Plato’s “Republic” where he discusses philosopher kings, supposedly the only ones truly fit to rule. Plato says the philosopher king is an enlightened soul who is above power and greed, thus making him the only just person fit to be in power. He argues that anyone who seeks power is not fit to rule because their desire for power makes them unjust. Thus, the Republic must choose the enlightened person that does not seek power.

So based not only on Fred Thompson’s logic (but also Plato); the fact that he has not desired the most powerful post on the planet makes him the only acceptable choice. Now if only Thompson would give Plato some cred here!

I’ve never had any desire to be President either. Guess it’s time to start my campaign.
