Republicans Give Free Advertising to MoveOn.org
Last week after General Petraeus gave his White House scripted testimony before Congress, many were angered at the same old merry go round rhetoric he brought to the table. This sparked MoveOn.org to take out this full page ad in the NY Times. When I first saw the ad last week I had a few impressions, I did agree with it but thought the language MoveOn.org used was a bit childish. Although it is catchy and attention grabbing and obviously that is the point.
But yesterday what took place on the Senate floor was nothing short of ridiculous with Senate Republicans asking for a vote to denounce the MoveOn ad. And what followed was another meaningless vote of 72-25 in favor of denouncing the ad.
I think what Republicans accomplished most here was giving free advertising to MoveOn.org who relies on donations to carry out attack ads against them (the full page NY Times ad cost $65,000). Then yesterday, this ad was not only all over the media but all over Congress, even Bush brought it up calling it “disgusting.” That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement but we should really compare Bush’s thought process to that of George Costanza on Seinfeld. What comes to mind here is the episode where George decides that if all his natural instincts are wrong, than the opposite must be right. Based on this logic the MoveOn ad is justified.

How did Dubya even find out about it? As I recall, he doesn’t read newspapers. Or anything above 3rd-grade level for that matter.
This was an easy one for him since there are big letters and half of it is a picture which W always appreciates. It’s not like he had to read the small print or anything but I’m sure someone had to walk him through Petraeus.
