The B5Media network:

Facebook Users Demand Privacy

Facebook BlondeFacebook, the social networking site that is riding the ass of Tom and his Myspace has come under some criticism lately. Apparently many members are appalled with Facebook not respecting their privacy by openly sharing information with their friends, family and the random person they just added.

Facebook is trying a revolutionary advertising scheme, it involves you buying something and then Facebook sharing what you bought with everyone on your friends list. But shouldn’t that be kosher? I mean, if you like that product/service there’s an excellent chance that some of your friends will like it too (even if they don’t know it yet).

I recently created a Facebook account so I could keep tabs (spy) on friends and family. Well, with that being the case, shouldn’t I be entitled to know exactly what they are purchasing? For example, Facebook’s tracking system which is called Beacon can track movie tickets you buy off Fandango and then it alerts all your friends about it. This way you can think oh, that sounds interesting, maybe I should check that out too. Or you can think oh, why the hell didn’t they invite me?

But apparently lots of Facebook users feel their privacy is being invaded and over the last 10 days it seems a sort of Facebook revolution is starting as 50,000 users have signed petitions to condemn the Beacon that watches over their every move. I mean sure, it’s one thing to share hot stories about who you had sex with the night previously, but people finding out about that new toaster you just bought? Well that just crosses the line.

Gotta love people that join a social networking website, adding dozens of strangers to their friends list and expect that somehow they are going to get privacy.

As you say, the toaster purchase reporting goes too far!

hehe, Yeah these things crack me up and give me the shits at the same time. I’m regrettably on both Myspace and recently added Facebook but created retarded profiles for myself on both.

To their credit, they can be a decent way to keep up with friends, but the culture of it is completely stupid.
