First I learned that it’s illegal in Denmark, then upon further reading I found out that it’s also banned in France and Norway.

So why is this magical drink that “gives you wings” banned in several countries? Apparently it’s all because a few people have died from it and these governments are concerned with the high levels of taurine and caffeine in the beverages. In fact, a new Danish friend that initially brought this to my attention said “it’s dangerous because it has a lot of caffeine,” saying this as she smoked a cigarette and had a vodka and fizzy drink in hand.

And the Danish government is clearly weary of high caffeine doses because they’ve also banned caffeine pills. But what’s the big deal anyways? Coffee contains a lot of caffeine and is far from banned in any of these countries. In fact, last time I checked, the French were known to enjoy a latte or two.

Red Bull also contains glucuronolactone which improves concentration and memory. Additionally, it contains inositol which can lift your mood by pumping extra serotonin to your brain. So a Red Bull is kinda like a coffee mixed with Ritalin and Prozac. No wonder it gives you wings!

Luckily here in the Netherlands there is no ban on Red Bull or equivalent substitutes. In fact, I am currently enjoying a beverage that is simply called “Energy Drink” and carries all the same ingredients as a Red Bull. “Energy Drink” also tastes practically identical to Red Bull but is a fraction of the price as it is produced here in the Netherlands.

You can pick up “Energy Drink” at a Dutch grocery store for as little as 29 euro cents! I was initially blown away by this seeing as how no energy drink in the United States is that cheap. So if you enjoy Red Bull and are traveling around Europe, make sure to stock up before a visit to France, Denmark or Norway. Otherwise you are sure to lose your wings!

Post from: Sirened

7-Eleven in Sweden Advertises Fruit!

Consumer Awareness

Europe

Foreigners

Sirened

Travel

7-11

7-Eleven

Big Bites

Denmark

Fruit

Liquor

Loose Candy

Netherlands

Public Drinking

Stale

Sweden

This is something you probably won’t see at your local 7-Eleven in say, Valdosta, Georgia. Unfortunately here in the Netherlands we have no 7-Elevens and must settle for eating food out of vending machines. Even though there hasn’t been that many cases of the disease in the United States, some of the beef that the United States exports are from cattle over 30 months old, an age deemed to have a higher risk of having mad cow disease.

The other reason is Big Korean Beef who wants to minimize the competition for the sake of their bottom line-and hey it’s in their interests. But if both Korean suppliers and Korean consumers are pissed, why is their government forcing the issue and hell, willing to resign over it? Because the US government has told Korean officials that the free trade agreement they worked out will not pass through Congress unless we could sell them our beef. And since the Koreans have lots of cars to sell us, it’s really in their interests to buy our beef.

But it isn’t just Koreans who have beef with our beef. American beef has been banned in Europe for more than a decade. The reason is the use of unsafe hormones in American beef and a correlation between those hormones and higher risks of cancer.

Of course, if we didn’t pump unnatural hormones into our cattle, how on Earth could we get a $9.99 T-Bone steak special at the Sizzler? And if we couldn’t get that special at the Sizzler, well, that would just be un-American damnit!

Post from: Sirened

Oil Hits $135 a Barrel…It Takes Oil to Deliver Oil Ya Know!

Consumer Awareness

Corporate

Politics

consumption

oil

oil making oil

OPEC

Just when people think gas prices have to settle, for at least a bit, they just keep getting higher, this time hitting a new record of $135 a barrel. OPEC? Not to blame. Excessive Consumption? Well, at one time President Bush said that was a fundamental right of Americans.

With gas prices at over $4 a gallon, many Americans fear gas could at some point hit, hell who knows? Imagine $9 a gallon?!? That would be outrageous and unbelievable! Of course, not to any American who has recently visited Europe and rented a car. If you ask them, they know exactly how $9 a gallon feels.

In Europe, the cost of a gallon is almost 6 Euros, combine that with the dreadful value of the US dollar and you have $9 a gallon gas right now. The reason gas is more expensive in Europe is because the taxes are higher, and since they have been higher for years, Europeans have never flocked to load up on gas guzzling SUV’s.

And for those who have gas guzzling SUV’s and are complaining about the price, realize that others are paying for your gas too. Those who consume less have to pay more than they should because of those who consume more. Of course, you can help offset some of your oil costs by investing in oil futures. That way, when you pay more you get more in return! It’s kinda like betting on black and red on the roulette table, with the green 00 being an X factor, like rogue regimes hording up all the oil and pissing on your investment.

And you know what else drives up the cost of oil? Shipping oil. It takes oil to deliver oil ya know! Hmm, perhaps that should be ExxonMobil’s new slogan…

Post from: Sirened

Around The Internets: Tuesday April 29th

2008 Elections

Celebrities

Consumer Awareness

Corporate

Criminals

Foreigners

Iraq

John McCain

Politics

Presidential Race

Sex

John McCain is a republican John Kerry?
