Get Ready for the Olympic Torch USA!
There it is, the Olympic torch, a marquee symbol of peace and unity throughout the world. Prior to each Olympic games, the torch is lit in Olympia, Greece and travels around the world before arriving at its host city on the evening of the Olympics opening ceremony. To carry the torch is an honor and people come from near and far to witness this famous icon of peace through fire.
The last 2 days though? Not so much. In London on Sunday, protesters for Tibet’s independence turned violent and tried to extinguish the peaceful fire. Despite enough security to protect young boys from Michael Jackson, the protesters were able to penetrate on several occasions and one random guy briefly got to hold the torch before he was thrown to the ground on his face. Dude, no cheating!
And today in Paris things got even worse as the Olympic torch had to be rescued and loaded into a van after it was extinguished on several occasions. Even 3,000 Parisian police were not enough to contain all the excitement the world has for the Beijing Olympics.
Next stop for the torch? San Fransisco on Wednesday! I can’t imagine how stoked the people of San Fran must be to have the honor of being the only US city the torch will visit this Olympiad. But given the events that have transpired over the past couple days, I just want to offer some advice for enjoying the festivities: Stay inside your home, lock the doors and whatever you do, please don’t go near that crazy fucking torch!
