Last Post from the United States…From Here On: Amsterdam!
Well, I think it’s only fitting that my last post while living in the United States should include a jackass picture of myself. That’s me a couple years ago going down a water slide while holding two life jackets in the air.
I feel the picture is kinda symbolic as far as sliding into a new chapter in life. While I’ve traveled Europe extensively (I met my Australian wife in Brugge Belgium) I’ve never actually lived in Europe. Luckily my wife and I had the same goal in mind, rather than doing the typical married couple thing: buying a house, having kids, etc., we decided to take advantage of a great opportunity while we’re still relatively young.
I appreciate everyone who reads this blog and comments and I especially want to thank Paul Springer of StarkedSF and Heather Takacs of TheNewYorkCityTraveler for writing two wonderful guest posts in what has been a chaotic week of moving from Tampa to Orlando before moving to Amsterdam this weekend. Not only has this helped Sirened get updated more regularly but it’s wonderful to post excellent and different voices other than my own!
It’s going to be interesting to continue to write for Sirened while living in Amsterdam; probably the most liberal place on the planet, the city is currently undergoing a conservative “cleanup.” Among other things, the city government is buying up portions of the red light district and ideally they are trying to shut it down all together. Sirened will continue to focus primarily on American politics and social issues but I will also incorporate a Dutch post every now and again.
The US is currently facing a heated debate as far as health care, one thing I know for sure is that my wife and I will be forced to buy into the Dutch health care system. Shortly after we arrive and get our residency cards, we will have to sign into their health care program and pay their monthly premiums. I will certainly be discussing my thoughts on this and my comparisons with the US health care system when appropriate.
I certainly believe that the change of scenery will interject some fresh ideas into Sirened and other writing projects that I currently have going. So goodbye from the US and the next time you hear from me I’ll be writing from what’s still the hedonist capital of the world. Should be interesting! ;)
