State Farm Not On Trent Lott’s Side

by Alex on October 12th, 2006

In an ironic twist of corporate fraud and political manipulation, the interests of Senator Trent Lott (R) Mississippi and State Farm have butted heads. Senator Lott’s $400,000 home in Pascagoula, MS was severly damaged by hurricane Katrina and his claim was rejected by State Farm.

His claim was rejected, like many others, because of the ambiguity of wind and water damage in the hurricane. Lott has asked that the insurance companies state in more simple terms what they do and do not cover. A confused Trent Lott said that insurance contracts contained complicated language and added “Don’t tell me they don’t do it on purpose.”

Lott and other homeowners in Mississippi are part of an ongoing law suit against the insurance companies who did not pay out. It is unclear whether the newly spirited consumer advocate will protest in front of State Farm headquarters. Lott was however, privileged to speak with the CEO of State Farm saying “He said he would look into my situation.” Lott added that he did not seek preferential treatment so it is unclear whether he will force the CEO to personally look into a few thousand other claims.

A Philadelphia lawyer who represents insurance companies, Randy J. Maniloff, said “Given that the senator has a personal dog in the fight, his actions have the appearance of an abuse of power.” Maybe, or perhaps Trent Lott has decided to become a champion of the people, like a Robin Hood of sorts, only that he wants his $400,000 back.
