State Unemployment Rates

by Alex on January 14th, 2008

HoboTomorrow, republican voters will be turning out in Michigan and the biggest issue for them is the economy. Michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the US at 7.4% and with the American auto industry in trouble, there is clearly a big reason for concern. Anyways, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the top and bottom 5 states for unemployment. The list was released Dec. 21st and is for November 2007.

Here’s the top 5 and you might be surprised (I am!)

1) Idaho-2.7%

2) South Dakota-2.8%

2) Utah-2.8%

4) Hawaii-2.9%

4) Wyoming-2.9%

So Idaho is employment king! Who knew? They do produce a lot of potatoes though so if you’re hard up, they can probably always use a hand on the potato farm. And Utah? ‘Big Mormon’ must really be booming!

Here’s the bottom 5 states (including the District of Columbia):

46)District of Columbia-5.7%

46) Arkansas-5.7%

48) South Carolina-5.9%

49) Mississippi-6.3%

50) Alaska-6.4%

51) Michigan-7.4%

The state that surprises me the most on the bottom is probably Alaska. If there aren’t jobs to be had, why on Earth would you live there? It seems that Alaskans need to spend less time Moose hunting and more time job hunting. Anyways, to see the complete list go here.
