US Finally Dealing With Pesky Afghan Drug Problem
It’s no secret that Afghanistan is by far and away the world’s largest producer and exporter of opium. But until now, the US government had ignored the opium problem and even downplayed it.
But according to this article in the NY Times, the US is finally deciding to do something about it. The Taliban has regained strength in the countryside and the war isn’t going as well as many incompetent officials had previously thought.
Opium has helped the Taliban regain strength by serving as a source of financial means to continue to fight their war against the US. Of course, as usual, our government is years behind in combating an issue that could have been stemmed sooner.
Oh well, at least there are lots of pretty opium fields over there. It must be lovely, especially with all the guys toting machine guns.
