What Does NC and Indiana Mean for Michigan and Florida?
Hillary Clinton needed to do a lot better last night to have a realistic, let’s not destroy the democratic party chance of winning the nomination. Barack Obama needed to do just a little bit better to finally finish off Hillary (even though she still wouldn’t have gone away).
Clinton, despite losing North Carolina by 14 points and at the time leading the smaller state of Indiana by just 4 points (ultimately winning by just 2), gave what seemed like a victory speech, saying that they had split Pennsylvania and North Carolina but she’d won the tiebreaker and it was now “full speed to the White House.” Those words led some analysts to believe that the speech was written thinking she would have had a far better night than she did.
Of course, the desperation came later in her speech when she once again mentioned the Michigan and Florida votes, a really sucky predicament for the democratic party. Of course it would be nice to have those states counted and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer wrote a fun little blog about it, saying that Michigan and Florida can hold new primaries in August when both are holding statewide local elections. But as many people commented to ‘The Beard,’ this would be terrible for the Dems because they would only have two months to prepare for well rested senior citizen John McCain. It is however a fantastic proposal for Wolf and the “best political team on television.” And Rush Limbaugh as well, seeing as how he wants the chaos to spark democrats into burning down American cities. Hmm, could we see a Blitzer/Limbaugh ticket in the future?
The reality is that both states broke the rules and cannot be rewarded with holding the final 2 contests in the democratic primary. Hillary says that Florida and Michigan voters would be disenfranchised in the general election if their votes were not counted. Well, as a registered democrat in Florida who voted in January, I can safely say I’ve long been over it. Was I happy my vote didn’t count? Absolutely not, but rules are rules and there’s little that can be done now. Of course, had I voted for Hillary Clinton, I might feel a little more ‘bitter’ about this.
As it stands now, Obama has 1,836 of the 2,025 delegates needed to win the nomination, Hillary has just 1,681 and her time has pretty much run out. Regardless, the spotlight is now on West Virginia and Kentucky and boy this will be fun! Yee haw!
