What is Iowa?

by Alex on January 3rd, 2008

CornToday is the day where the great state of Iowa will help 49 other states (many much larger) decide who will be our next ‘Decider.’ In a recent post entitled What is a Caucus? One reader asked “what is Iowa?” Great question, let’s examine.

-There is a common misconception that Iowa in fact, does not exist, it does as reported by our media, maps and the fact that I’ve conversed with a few people from the state.

-Iowa became a state in 1846 and is our 29th state

-Iowa is first in the nation in corn production. Thus it helps produce such important corn products like corn syrup, ethanol and corn on the cob.

-The official state website of Iowa boasts that it “supports a rich and diverse cultural population and history.” That’s right; it is so diverse that the population is 91% white-this melting pot of whiteness is made up mostly of people from German, Irish and English ancestry.

-Iowa boasts one amusement park called Adventureland located in Altoona. This is just northeast of their capitol, Des Moines.

-Iowa’s gross state product for 2005 was $113.5 billion! The states booming economy is due largely to all the corn, hogs, cows, insurance companies and lack of fun things to due in the state.

-Iowa is home to celebrities like Tom Arnold and Ashton Kutcher. Thank goodness!

Anyways, thank you Iowa for deciding our presidency and providing us with all that corn and all those pending insurance claims.
